Commissioning fees, Addicts' Symphony & Melos Sinfonia

Three composers - Joe Bates, Lauren Redhead and Gidon Fineman - discuss the implications of Sound and Music's recent survey of composers' commission fees. Sound and Music's Chief Executive Susanna Eastburn, said most composers were paid 'shockingly low' fees, but can anything be done about this?

Marco Martinez participated in Channel 4's Addicts' Symphony, a programme which saw 10 musicians suffering with addiction problems face their fears of performing to join the LSO in concert. Marco tells us how his own stage fright as a child led him to alcholism, and stopped him from playing the violin for over 30 years.

The Melos Sinfonia are performing Sir Peter Maxwell Davies' Eight Songs for a Mad King in the week of the composer's eightieth birthday. We join them in rehearsals.

Series 2, Episode 6

This week, we travel abroad: to Qatar, with the British Paraorchestra, and Sri Lanka, with Music Off Canvas. Steph West, a harpist and singer from the Paraorchestra, joins Lloyd to discuss the group's visit to the Middle East, and they perform together in the studio. Hannah Grayson outlines Music Off Canvas's community outreach work in Sri Lanka, which involved music and movement.

Series 2, Episode 3

Notus Winds is one of the country's leading young wind quintets. Recently, they won the Royal Academy of Music Patrons' Award, and will subsequently be making their evening recital debut at the Wigmore Hall on June 2. They talk to Lloyd Coleman about their music making, and perform Piazzolla's Libertango live in the studio. We also join the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales in concert with acclaimed young conductor Ben Gernon.
