Lloyd Coleman | presenter & producer

Born in South Wales in 1992, Lloyd Coleman is now emerging as a composer, clarinettist and conductor. He is currently studying for an undergraduate degree in composition at the Royal Academy of Music with Gary Carpenter. Prior to this, he attended Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester.

He frequently broadcasts on TV and radio as a musician and guest.

In recent years, Lloyd has received a number of national awards for his compositions. He won a prize in the BBC Proms Young Composers’ Competition for three consecutive years, as well as gaining recognition in the Hampstead and Highgate and EPTA UK Young Composers’ competitions. Lloyd has also been commissioned by a wide array of groups and artists. These new works include The Amber Scherzo written for the AMBER Trust, Jubilation written for the 10th anniversary of the Beenham Wind Orchestra, Gathering Contours performed by the Chetham’s Symphony Orchestra, and Scherzo and Melancholy, written for renowned bassoonist Karen Geoghegan. In 2012, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales performed and recorded Breaking the Wall, a forty minute piece for narrator and orchestra inspired by the Greek tale of Pheidippides and in celebration of the arrival of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London.
Lloyd's progress in writing this work was documented in a film for BBC Wales.
Other notable public performances of Lloyd's music have been given by groups such as the Sacconi Quartet, New London Chamber Ensemble, Endymion Ensemble, Spirituoso Trio and the Aurora Orchestra. Several of his pieces have been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, and he has made a number of appearances at festivals and conferences across the U.K including the RNCM Chamber Music Festival, BASBWE Weekends in London and Manchester and the Musical Brain conference held at the Southbank Centre.

His music making has also taken him further afield to Italy (where his piece for Chetham’s Symphony Orchestra was performed at the former home of British composer William Walton), Uganda and Trinidad (both of which he visited to participate in workshops with musicians from around the globe brought together by “The Commonwealth Resounds!” project).

When he is not composing or conducting new music, Lloyd enjoys performing with the clarinet as his instrument. For two years he was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, through which he had the opportunity to play under many renowned conductors including Sir Mark Elder, Semyon Bychkov and Vasily Petrenko, at major concert venues across the U.K. More recently he joined the British Paraorchestra, a group led by conductor Charles Hazlewood who performed at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games and played the National Anthem during the Queen’s annual Christmas broadcast at Buckingham Palace.
